Charles Card Obituary

April 8th, 2024 was a difficult day for us. We had to say goodbye to the Falmouth Crow. Charlie (Charles/Chuck/Dad/Grandad) Card passed away peacefully in his sleep this afternoon with a smile on his face because Andy and I were teasing him as usual.

Born in Pictou, Nova Scotia, the Card family later moved to Falmouth. As a teen, Charlie enjoyed fishing, air cadets where he won a marksman award, and driving truck.

At 18, Charlie joined the Air Force (yes the Air Force, before it was combined to form the Armed Forces). When asked, he always answered he was Air Force.

Early in his military career he married June Sanford of Walton, and soon after, their two sons, Ricky and Andy, joined the mix. Starting in Downsview, Ontario, the New Card family with pets in tow, made the rounds to new postings, with stops in Summerside, PEI, Borden, Ontario, and Halifax. Eventually, Charlie returned to his family home in Falmouth.

Tired of the traveling military life, Charlie retired from the Forces. He drove school bus and log truck until a position came up as a crane operator at the Halifax Dockyard where he completed his second career. Charlie even drove for two shuttle services to make sure passengers got safely to work in the city.

One of many skills he learned in the Air Force was if it moved, he could drive it - plows, jeeps, deuce and a halfs, 18-wheelers, and even a hovercraft. When most people had vacation leave, they would go on holiday. Charlie would drive potato truck for different farmers.

Charlie had many hobbies- bass fishing, chasing sirens and gypsum boats, and running to Tim Hortons for Mum's coffee. He loved his country music and played with several groups at dances, jams, seniors' homes, and the annual Brison jamboree down the shore. Charlie was quick with a joke and loved to laugh. He was always there to take us to baseball and hockey, and we could hear, "BOOM!" echo through the old barns.

Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Chesley and Susie, wife June, and sister Mary. He is survived by his sister Sybil Flemming, sons and family, Rick and Tracey, Andy and Laureen, "third son" Paul Burgess, and beloved grandkids Ben, Dawson, and Abby.

We would like to thank all the staff at the Elms in Falmouth who took care of Dad. He wasn't just a resident there, you treated him as family.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Parkinson Canada, Windsor Elms Village, or a charity of your choice.

A private family burial will take place this summer. A celebration of life will take place as well. It's going to be one hellava jam session.
