It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of George Lee Foster, 81 of Cole Harbour, NS. He passed away peacefully at home after a courageous struggle with cancer. Born in Mosher’s Corner (Middleton), NS, he was the son of the late George Lee Foster and the late Harriett Foster (nee Crandall). He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years Rose Marie Foster (nee McNeil) of Sydney, NS in 2007 and stepson David Field of Dartmouth.
George served with the R.C.A.F. for 25 years where he primarily worked with Mobile Support Equipment in which we drove then supervised everything from aircraft refuelers, to cranes, to runway snowplows, ambulances and more. His career took him across Canada, to the United States to Germany then back to Canada again. A proud accomplishment of his career with the R.C.A.F was time spent as a DJ for Armed Forces radio in Germany in the late sixties. His passion for this later carried on back in Canada where for a number of years he operated his own part time DJ business called Mr. Music.
After his retirement from the Armed Forces, he had a 22 year career with Halifax (Metro) Transit. Starting out as a bus driver, his role evolved to where he spent most of his years there as Head Trainer for Transit drivers. There he had involvement with all departments in Transit as well as being the liaison with multiple levels of municipal and provincial government agencies.
After his second retirement he spent a lot of his time learning and developing internet technologies that included his own blog and website he was very proud of that received visitors from around the world. In time, he met then married his second wife Lois and together they wintered in Florida for many years as “Snowbirds”.
While living in Florida they went on many adventures through the Southern U.S. where he met a lot of people he was glad to have known and had many once in a lifetime experiences he was very happy to have had.
He is survived by wife Lois Foster (nee Field); sons Lee (Joanne) of Dartmouth, NS, Michael (Melissa) of Halifax, NS and Stephen (Cassandra) of Dieppe, NB and stepson Terry Field (Donna) of Summerside, PE, sister Louise Boates (Ronnie) of Wilmot NS and brother Darrell Foster (Lois) of Middleton, NS. He is also survived by grandchildren Ryan and Shawn Foster, Hunter and Autumn Malay, Dimitri Mann, Mackenzie Tingley and Reese McQueen.
Private committal service for immediate family only will take place Monday, November 6th at Memorial Gardens in Westphal to be followed by a Celebration of Life at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #160 at 703 Main St., Dartmouth, NS, from 2:00pm to 3:30pm.
