Margot Ellen Schenk (1937-2022) of Halifax died peacefully on 19 April, aged 85. Born in Montreal, she was the only child of Karl Fennel and Margaret Ellen Hurd.
She attended a range of schools in Ontario, before enrolling at University of Western Ontario. There she completed a BSc (Nursing) degree and met the love of her life, Paul Edward Schenk, whom she married in 1960. After a short career in nursing, she and Paul relocated to Halifax. They travelled the world together before she embarked on a new career as a librarian, getting her Master’s degree in Library Sciences at Dalhousie University. She worked at Fisheries Nova Scotia and then at Saint Mary’s University Patrick Power Library and earned a Diploma in Public Administration at Dalhousie University. Margot and Paul continued their travelling, played together in quartets and orchestras, sailed their boat Silvergirl and enjoyed their lives together to the full. They raised several beloved dogs, travelling with friends to dog shows – a highlight was winning the Halifax Kennel Club Best in Show with Crockett. After Paul’s death (2000) she volunteered for several charities and the Atlantic Terrier Association, and travelled in the USA, Cuba, Europe and India with friends. She will be deeply missed by daughters Margaret Ellen and Catherine Ruth (Duncan Ross) and grandchildren Margaret Mathilda Jean and Archibald Paul Ross.
