Randal Balcom Obituary

The family of Dr. Randal Robert Balcom is saddened to announce his passing on April 5, 2023 at 3:33pm. At the age of 67, he passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was immersed in the inspirational art of Holly Carr and serenaded with "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles. A beautiful life came to an end with dignity and grace at the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville, N.S.

Randy was a devoted husband of 35 years to Suzanne (nee Errett) and a dedicated father to Samuel and Rebecca (Nicholas). He was a beloved brother to Gary and Deborah (Michael) and uncle to Katherine. Randy treasured all his friends and valued the support of Dr. David Bardsley. Randy's cat Milo never left his side.

Randy thrived in his 30-year dental career from Vancouver, Kelowna, and Armstrong, B.C. to Wolfville, N.S. Passionate about learning, he was generous in sharing his expertise. Clinical excellence in continuing dental education will live on in the legacy of the East Coast Endodontic Study Club (ECESC) that he co-founded in 2003 with his close friend and classmate Dr. Robert S. Roda and his wife Suzanne. The ECESC operates at the Faculty of Dentistry, Dalhousie University in Halifax, N.S.

Randy defied Parkinson's and Dementia by being active and adventurous. He lived his life, not the diagnosis and never missed a day at the gym. The compassion of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) allowed him to run the race to the finish line with integrity. A donation to the Maritime Brain Tissue Bank was important to him to advance the understanding of these conditions.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the unwavering, dedicated care and guidance of Dr. David Tilley, Dr. Kenneth Rockwood, Dr. Gordon Gubitz, Erica Maynard NP and Marie Claire Chartrand. Special thanks to Dr. Jeana MacLeod, Dr. Crystal Todd, Dr. Barbara Ross and all the staff at the Valley Regional Hospital for their collective teamwork and kindness. Appreciation to the residents of Miners Landing who have treated the family as their own.
