Zelda Bushell Obituary

Zelda Maxine Bushell

June 21, 1949 – May 10, 2021

Zelda Maxine Bushell (Burrows), 71, of Windsor, NS, passed away peacefully May 10, 2021 at Hants Community Hospital with both sons by her side. Born in Windsor, she was the daughter of the late George Earl and Lorna Jean (Miller) Burrows.

Upon graduation from Windsor Regional High School, Zelda received her teaching degree from the Nova Scotia Teachers College. Zelda served 15 dedicated years of teaching at Three Mile Plains Elementary, filling the retired shoes of her friend, mentor and previous grade 3 teacher, the late Marion Boyd. Zelda was a champion of women’s rights and spent many years as an active member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union. As a teacher, Mrs. Bushell was fondly remembered by all her students. She had a passion for learning and developed innovative ways to impart knowledge to each of her students. Mrs. Bushell had an enviable ability to recognize a student’s individual needs and tailor her craft accordingly. She put her heart into ensuring each and every one of her students moved on to the next level with not only knowledge, but the confidence to succeed.

Zelda was loved by countless friends and all her family. Prior to returning to Windsor in 2019, Zelda lived for many years in Cape Breton where she foraged deep friendships and took great pride tutoring local youth. She leaves behind many memories, ensuring those close to her will continue to laugh, cry and pass on one-of-a-kind stories for years to come. For every grandchild, there was always a treat on hand to which a parent would say, “No”. Special occasions were acknowledged by cards with stickers and gum, and usually a parcel chock full of love and Dollar Store treasures. She was affectionately known as Aunt Dee Dee to her many nieces and nephews.

Zelda always had a crossword on the go and over the years has won hundreds of Jeopardy! championships from her living room. Zelda was a woman of strong faith and member of the Windsor Baptist Church for many years.

She is survived by children: Cory (Ruby), Enfield, NS; Kylee (Brian), Sooke, BC and Craig (Chrissy) Garlands Crossing, NS; grandchildren: Morgan, Wyllow, Brycen, Karmyn, Taylor, Mataya, Grayce;  great-grandson: Nicholas; siblings: Merton, Marven, Wayne, Wray, Karen Davis, Dolly McEachern and Cathie Boyd.

She was predeceased by her long-time companion, Marie MacKinnon; special sister Cheryl Jean Burrows; and sister Marley Joye in infancy.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Gladys M Manning Retirement Community and Northwood Homecare.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Laing House in support of mental health or The Marguerite Centre in support of women’s addictions.
